These sausage rolls have become a party favourite in the Gower house. They are full of flavour and very tasty. Once you've tried homemade sausage rolls you'll never want to eat store bought again.

Hi Wendy, thanks for this recipe. I will give it a go for DS2's confirmation afternoon tea that we are having in June. Sounds yummy, xxx

Wendy, these sound delicious ... I'm wondering what I could substitute the pastry with to make it low-carb? I have an idea ... time to do some experimenting!
ReplyDeleteThese look so tasty Wendy. I love home made sausage rolls too. The bought ones just taste more and more awful I think. I laughed when I saw pre-made 'sausage roll filling' at Coles yesterday. What the heck? I hope you don't mind me suggesting to Patsy from A Working Pantry, that steamed spinach, silverbeet, or cabbage leaves make a great casing for the mixture instead of pastry. Can't wait to try your recipe. Thankyou. Mimi xxx
ReplyDeleteStore bought seem to be dry and tasteless. If they are served up at parties, I won't go near them. Please feel free to pass the info onto Patsy.
DeleteHi Wendy,
ReplyDeleteYour recipe is almost identical to mine! I just love these, and as you say, they are so much better than store bought.
Were do you buy your sausage mince from and how much can you buy it for? Woolies and Coles are now very expensive (about $7/kg), and I only buy the mince when I see it on clearance, which isn't very often.
Many thanks,
Jill
Yes the sausage mince is dear. I still buy mine from Coles but have considered buying a tray of sausages just to get the mince cheaper. I'm thinking of cuttting an end and squeezing the mince out. Might be a bit messy but cheaper.
DeleteWe only eat this a couple of times a year at parties.
That's actually a really great idea Wendy. My daughter loves this recipe so I cook it for her when I can get the mince on special. I always grate some vegies through it, to make them a little healthier for her.
DeleteI add a small grated potato to the mince and 1 egg to bind it all. Must make some soon!
ReplyDeleteGood idea Joolz.
DeleteTry a good butcher for sausage mince. It is cheaper than the pre packed mince at the supermarkets
ReplyDeleteI think I'll try Tasman Meats next time I'm there.
DeleteBeing in the US, we don't have sausage mince as such. What can I use???
ReplyDeleteIf you can buy plain beef bbq sausages then maybe squeeze the mince out. I have a friend in Texas who saw my fb post and said she's going to make some. I'll ask her.
DeleteYummy Wendy. I do the squeeze the sausage meat out thing. Then add grated carrot and some tomato sauce... It works well as I often get a massive tray of sausages on a big special.i know someone who was famous for mini sausage rolls, bite sized ones. It turned out she didn't even squeeze the sausage meat out of the sausages she just wrapped sausages in pastry, baked and sliced. They were beautiful. But I like to add the carrot and sometimes bread crumbs as well. Hope to make some next week. xxx
ReplyDeleteYes I think I'll be squeezing from now on. It's cheaper.
DeleteSounds good wendy, have you tried using normal mince before?
ReplyDeleteIf so have you noticed a difference? I have heaps of normal mince in the freezer and would prefer to use that then going to the shop and buying some sausage mince. Just wanna try keeping my spending costs down for the time being.
I haven't tried normal beef mince. It could work if you have a binding ingredient. Maybe a few eggs.
DeleteWe don't have your basic sausages like in Aus/NZ, you just don't get them here. Premix do make some sausages, I will look further at those. Please do ask your friend, I'd be interested to know what she will use. Puff Pastry is hard to come by, too......lol. You only get two sheets per pack. Can you tell I would kill for your run-of-the-mill Aussie/Kiwi bakery here???? I actually did drive once, 90 minute round-trip to an Aussie bakery. I wasn't that thrilled.
ReplyDeleteWhat sausages do you cook on a bbq ? Yes I know puff pastry is hard to come by in USA. My Mum and Dad travel there every few years. Mum wanted to make a family sized meat pie ( recipe in the recipe section here ) and could only get 2 sheets for over $3. We pay under $3 for 6 sheets here.
DeleteI hear Ausies who have coffee shops in America are doing a roaring trade. You could always move to Australia. We have wonderful fresh food here.
Ok Shannon, my friend has replied. She said she buys preground sausage ( store brand ). She also said you need to go to a meat processor or a regular meat market. Hope this helps you. Might be worth finding a bakery supply store ( maybe wholesale direct to public ) to see if you can get puff pastry that way.
DeleteThey look delicious! Thank you so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteA question from a novice cook do you freeze before or after baking Thank you they look lovely Shelley
ReplyDeleteShelby, I freeze after cooking. My BIL likes to roll them up and refreeze before cooking. I'm not sure it's safe to refreeze pastry without cooking so I'm not game to try.
Deleteoppps, sorry I spelt your name wrong.
DeleteWendy, your post inspired me so much that instead of making pasties for dinner as per my menu planner I made sausage rolls. We'll have the pasties in next fortnight planner. It was my week to shop for the fortnight so I picked up just under a kilo of sausage mince at Tasman Meats for $4, not sure if that's a good price. I added some bread crumbs, carrot, onion, & celery that was lying around looking a bit wilted. I managed to get 20 sausage rolls out of 5 sheets of pastry, they are clearly not mini sausage rolls. We'll have some for dinner tonight, I'll freeze another 8 for dinner another night. I did eat one for lunch, you know for quality control purposes lol it was delicious! The other 3 can go in lunch boxes for tomorrow. Thanks again. they are just the thing on a cold and wet Melbourne day. Cheers Donna Z :)
ReplyDelete$4 is a good price and I know all about quality control. It's very popular in my home.
DeleteTry mincing the mince a bit more in the food processor. If it is finer it's similar.
ReplyDeleteYou can make your own puff pastry if you can't find it In the supermarkets.
ReplyDeleteThese sound yummy Wendy.
ReplyDeleteI have made sausage rolls without adding anything to the mix and they turned out pretty well. There are spices already added to the mix. These days I prefer to use chicken mince rather than sausage and add bits and pieces for flavour. Same with chicken sausages, just pop them in pastry, roll and bake.
I will be saving your recipe, I think these would be handy to put in the freezer for a handy snack.

Just made these and can let everyone know they are yummy yummy - I added some fresh bread crumbs mixed in my small blender and home made cooking sauce (salsa) so much better than the bought stuff. And they turned out awesome got 15 out of this mix as I made them a little larger and filled a little more. Thanks for sharing.
