Hi Wendy. I have only just recently come across your blog and am enjoying reading your posts. I was wondering if you have any thoughts on shopping at Costco? I mostly shop at Aldi and a little bit from Woolworths. I have been put off by the cost you have to pay up-front at Costco when I can't actually see what they have on offer first or any of their prices. I also would need to take in travelling (from Narre Warren)and am just unsure if it's worth it. Thanks for your time, Cheryl
ReplyDeleteYes Wendy - I too would be interested in your thoughts on Costco.
DeleteIf you are a budget shopper like myself then Costco is not going to save you any money. Cath from Cheapskate took me to Costco for a visit. There were only a handful of items that we found slightly cheaper or the same price as the supermarkets.
DeleteFor example, the Kleenex toilet paper ( I think that was the brand ) was dearer than the Aldi 3 ply which is a fabulous product and better than Kleenex.
Most items there are brands and / or you have to buy in bulk. The fruit and veg was quite dear and not that fresh. I ended up buying croissants for a Christmas Day breakfast treat and peanut butter Reeces as a treat fro myself.
Bi carb is cheap there so your best bet is if you know someone who has a membership then ask them to get it for you.
I would be more inclined to have a look a couple of times a year if there was no membership fee.
I've tried costco in the past. If you want cheaper branded items then they are cheaper (however you have to be careful, not ALL are cheaper, some might be the same price and others can actually be more expensive). I found you had to buy a big bulk of an item to get savings and to go there a few times a year to get your money's worth out of the membership. I find it's cheaper to wait for an item to go on special at the supermarket and and buy it then or find the equivalent at aldi. Plus you don't have yearly membership fees. We bought their beef mince which I'll never buy again. It let off a strange smell when cooking and we ended up throwing it out.
