This Week's Frugal Tasks Saturday 19th March 2016

Here's what I got up to this week -

*  Saved the wrapping paper from a gift Jessica gave me to cheer me up.  The paper will be used to make some cards.

*  Made a batch of chocolate choc chip muffins for the freezer.

*  Picked a small handful of raspberries each day to freeze.  The season is almost over.

*  Ate freezer meal leftovers for dinner one night.

*  Blessed a friend with lots of excess food that was given to us.  My friend said it was a miracle as she had family coming to stay and didn't know what she was going to feed them.

*   Gratefully received a bag of lemons from a friend.  I'll be freezing the juice for future use in jam making,  baking and cooking.

*  Gratefully received two samples of Magic Eraser at the shopping centre.

*  Darren found two fuel discount dockets in a trolley.

*  Diluted two bottles of white vinegar 50 / 50 with tap water.  It works just as good for cleaning.

*  Baked two loaves of wholemeal bread with extra goodness.

*  Baked raspberry and white chocolate muffins for snacks and to take to the Cheapskate's card making day.

There's nothing like home baked bread.

I asked Jessica to help fold the washing. Later I found her watching something on her tablet and playing with the pegs.  Some things never change.  She loved playing with the pegs as a toddler.

Unfortunately I don't have a very big frugal list this week or many photos to share.  On Sunday night we heard the sad news that our family friend passed away.  Don was a special part of our family history and the reason Darren and I met and married.  He was a loving husband and father to two young girls.  He was also a champion for the homeless and disadvantaged in Dandenong and surrounding suburbs devoting many years at Cornerstone Contact Centre.  Please uphold his family in prayer.

What frugal tasks did you complete this week ?

  1. Dear Wendy, I was so sad to hear that you lost a dear friend , please be kind to yourself and take care. I have been thinking of you and Darren and your daughters. Please don't worry that your post today wasn't as long as other weeks. You still achieved a fair bit and family and friends come first. My eek was pretty good Wendy:
I gratefully accepted some meals from my parents
Refilled my foaming hand wash dispenser with mostly water , there was some soap left in it
    Made more cards
    Cooked all meals from scratch
Shopped at Aldi and saved at least $45 !
Planning what veg I will plant in my container garden next
Started learning to crochet so I can have gifts to give other than cards
De cluttered my unit a little.
Bought specials from another supermarket on products I needed
Used cuttlefish for my budgies that were given to me saving $ as they are expensive in stores.
Had morning tea at a local beach with food from home
I think that is it for me this week Wendy . Take care.

  5. Wendy, so sorry for the loss of your friend. It looks like you had a frugal week in spite of the grieving you are experiencing. When frugality is a way of life, it just happens regardless of whatever else is going on around you.

  7. Dear Wendy, What a very hard week. You did well and kept things going. I feel very sad for the family of your friend especially as the children are young. Also I read up on the work of the Cornerstone Church and it is so impressive.
I hope you have a good weekend and am thinking of you, with love Annabel.xxx

  8. Hi Wendy - enjoy your blog very much! Did you know that you can buy 'magic erasers' on eBay for as little as 10c each? They are called 'Melamine foam sponges'. I have bought them in bulk from China for several years. They were originally around 1c each but as people have caught on to them, the price has gone up. Some are better quality than others. The 'melamine foam' was invented in Germany and is used as insulation for pipes and soundproofing.

    1. Yes I'd heard you can get them cheap. With all the samples I get, I haven't had to buy any for years.

  9. Thinking of your family at this time, Wendy. Hugs.
    Love those guavas.
This week I completed the Flybuys offer I started and got the $50 to spend at Coles. To tell the truth, I prefer Aldi, but it was worth it for the offer.
Noticed on my Coles docket that the bags of apples I had purchased were scanned at $4.50 rather than the advertised $2.70. Went back in and received a refund for both bags. Then one bag was free and the other was given to me at the advertised price.
I spot cleaned our carpet with yellow Sunlight soap and water with great results.
Gratefully received some clothing from a relative for the teens, they were very pleased. I gifted her a jar of my relish.
Altered the hem on a skirt of one of the above items and fixed a winter jacket with the sewing machine.
Gratefully received a hoard of fabric via a nice lady on Freecycle. Will be used by the teens in sewing and craft projects, lots of vintage prints they love.
Made soup, yoghurt, mini quiches, a curry, stewed some fruit.
DD2 gifted a friend new cosmetics we had on hand and made a card for the occasion.
My friend called in late one morning and we had my homemade soup, her bread and a lovely walk and catch up with several cups of tea, all impromptu as she didn't know if I'd be home.
Found some lovely antique dining chairs in our neighbouring street on hard rubbish whilst walking with my friend and brought them home to sell online.
    Take care,
    Marie

  11. Yes, that is the other side of being frugal and thrifty - it allows us to bless others by giving. Giving releases dopamine too and always creates a inner sense of calm and purpose. A great balance to just always receiving. Motivational as always Wendy.

  12. You are always frugal. It is your lifestyle and we know you do it on auto pilot always. Be thankful for the blessed memories you hold dear in your heart of your beloved friend. I believe that in any loss of a loved one God has a plan for those who remember them. May your love of the Lord give you strength and vision at this sad time.
