This Week's Frugal Tasks Saturday 2nd September 2017

My frugal list this week is very much on the small side.  I've been unwell since Tuesday afternoon so being frugal has not been a priority. I should be better in a few days.  I think I've caught a cold of sorts with aches,  hot and cold fevers and a sore throat. Thankfully so many frugal tasks are routine in our everyday life.  Here's what I managed to get done ( without thinking about it ) -

*  Made pita chips for snacking.

*  Ate freezer meals and leftovers a couple of nights when I wasn't well.

*  Saved the washing machine water for each next load.

*  Sold more cards and crafts in my blog shop.  I also sold a few wallet cards to family members.

*  Cooked all meals from scratch.

*  Picked the very last of the lemons off the tree for this year.

*  Dried most of the washing on clothes horses over ducted heating vents or outside.

*  Used the dry mop to sweep the bamboo floors.

*  Lined a few household bins with bread bags

*  Closed a few ducted heating vents and doors in rooms not being used during the day.

Plum blossoms.

Made to order for the blog shop.

What was on your frugal list this week ?

  2. Hi Wendy, sorry to hear you haven't been well, it's been such a "sickly season" all over the country.
I made your Whole Orange Cake this week. I had some not so nice oranges that were just being left day after day in the fruit bowl, so I turned them in to Orange cake. I've made your cake before, but I wasn't really fussed on the slightly tough and sour skin, even though I blitzed it in the food processor, so this time I boiled all 3 oranges for about an hour before blitzing, I was so happy with the result. I divided the blitzed oranges into 3 portions, made 2 cakes with 2 portions and froze one portion for another day. It was really no bother to boil them, they just blipped away while I was doing other things, and then the cooled water I boiled them in went on to my pot plants! No Oranges or water wasted :)

  3. Goodmorning Wendy, I am sorry to hear you are unwell, and hope you get better very soon. This weeks frugal achievements are
Cut up a beautiful big bunch of Dill and froze it for later use
Picked a huge bunch of home grown mustard greens for dinner one night
Picked another two red Paw Paws from our tree that I grew from saved seeds and picked the last of the limes from our tree
Made another two loaves of light rye bread plus a lovely soft and light white loaf
    Line dried all the washing
Kept the warm up water from the showers to keep the potted figs out the front hydrated

And that's all I can think of at the mo.
    Have a lovely day
    Fi

  9. Dear Wendy ,
You still had a great frugal week even though you haven't been well. Please rest and take care of yourself.i hope you feel better soon.
Thank you for making that card for me , from what I have seen it looks beautiful, I cannot wait to receive it. Whenever I place an order with you I always am so excited to get the package in the mail, like a little child at Christmas!. Your cards and crafts are so well made Wendy ,I love them thank you.
    My week has included:
Saving $20 into my Christmas fund
Receiving 2 hours of subsidised cleaning from my Centacare lady, saving lots compared to if I hired a private cleaning person.
I made dinner out of leftovers at least two nights this week.
I gratefully received a meal from my parents .
I gratefully received some more goodies for craft from my local news agency, the goodies are free gifts from craftmagazines they do not sell.
I refilled my foaming hand wash pump using a tiny bit of hand wash refill and water.
I did a meal plan and shopping list for this fortnight.
I spent less than I expected to on groceries .
I created a gift out of things I had here at home .
I will be receiving vouchers for free meals for my birthday which is next Saturday .
I received an email from a large homewares store giving me 20% off for my birthday.
I think that's all this week Wendy, well it's all I can remember anyway!.
Thanks again for making the card for me Wendy , especially when you are not well, I appreciate it.have a great Father's Day tomorrow Darren and all the dads out there.
    Love Barb W.

  10. Hi Wendy, Sorry to hear you are sick. Take care of yourself and don't try to do too much too soon!!
This week I had a blow out with items we needed/repaired for the house. Replaced our old printer that lasted 4 years so we definitely got our money's worth. Replaced a couple of lounge seat cushions and will have it professionally cleaned next week. Much cheaper than a new lounge. We need our outdoor chairs re slung too. We are trying to repair not replace where we can. Most of the time the item is as good as new for a fraction of the cost to replace. We were able to use our emergency fund for a couple of things so no credit cards have been used. Love it!!
    Hope you feel better soon
    Rachel :)

  11. I sure do hope you feel better soon. Sounds like what I had about a month or so ago and it had me down for almost a week! One frugal thing that week for me, was that I was so sick I didn't eat as much! :) Take care and I hope you have a lovely day and weekend!

  12. Sorry to hear you have been struck down with flu. I missed a couple of days work with similar symptoms. Thankfully it wasn't influenza A which is pandemic in Victoria this year. Grateful that I got my flu vaccine in May.
Received news of what the laptop required by DD2 for next year will cost. So will need to be very frugal for next 2 months. I hate it when I miss work because I lose money coming in. Makes budgeting very hard.

  13. Sorry you are not feeling well, Wendy. The aches and pains make me think you might have the flu.I hope you are better soon.

It wasn't an especially frugal week here. This is what I accomplished:

    (1) I was involved in a storage project last weekend and wanted to finish. Needed some hardware, and the hardware store is over 20 miles away. I resisted the impulse for immediate gratification and didn't go (saving about $6 in gas, plus who-knows-what else I would have bought?). I waited until I got back to town and was passing Lowe's. But, I saved even more--I found some of the things I needed by "shopping at home" first.

    (2) Still eating down the pantry and freezer, and it is down to almost nothing. Still enough to feed us for a few more weeks, especially if I don't mind some weird menus (I don't).

    (3) I needed a case for my laptop. I have a nice soft-side briefcase that I don't use anymore. I also had some pieces of a closed cell sleeping bag pad. Today I am cutting pieces of the pad to fit in pockets on either side of the briefcase. I also plan to make an envelope to further protect the laptop. I have the quilted pillow shams from an old bedspread and that is what I am using for the envelope.

    (4) I bought grapes for .99 lb. My price point for grapes is $1.29 lb. or I don't buy them.

    (5) Gratefully received 3 more pieces of free pie!

About 10 days ago, I bought a used washer and dryer for our cabin (where we are living through the winter). I am very pleased with how they wash and dry, but the wash cycle seems long and will probably result in more electricity usage. On the good side, it has the biggest tub I've ever seen on a top-loader, so I can wash fewer loads. And the dryer doesn't shake the whole house when it runs! I admit, I have been trying out the dryer and not hanging clothes...which I will get back to, as soon as the novelty wears off.

  14. Dear Wendy, I am so sorry you haven't been well. It's interesting though that you are sort of automatic pilot with so many frugal tasks, and that cannot be underestimated. I hope this week is better for you. Mimi xxx

  15. I go back and forth between stockpiling and just buying what we need week to week. We have $100 a week for food and toiletries. I seem to spend more by buying too much at the beginning of the month so then I go back to weekly shopping.
