This Week's Frugal Tasks Saturday 15th April 2017

Happy Easter to all of you. May you enjoy the small break from work and your normal routines as we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Here's what we got up to this week in the Gower home -

*  Made 1 kilo of yoghurt from scratch.  My starter was some homemade natural yoghurt that I'd frozen from the last batch.

*  Baked lots of cranberry hootycreek biscuits using dough I'd frozen a while ago.

*  Sold one dozen eggs.

*  Gratefully received a bag of apples from a local fruit and veg shop.

*  Stocked up on chicken drumsticks bought at $2.49 kg.

*  Made bread pudding using saved bread crusts.

*  Baked four loaves of wholemeal bread with extra goodness.

*  Filled up with petrol at $1.19 per litre before it went up for the Easter holidays.

*  Made two bottles of  50 / 50 cordial.

*  Made two dozen hot cross buns.

*  Dried the washing on the line.

*  Picked a bowl of feijoas from our garden.  Very yummy.

*  Gratefully received a handmade lemon myrtle room freshener spray from a friend.  It smells divine.

*  Gratefully received milk,  capsicums,  cucumbers and eggs from various friends.

  2. Happy Easter to you too.

I've been doing a lot of freezer cooking. Making big batches, dividing, labelling and freezing, Caught up on making bread for the freezer too. Eating what we can from the garden and planting new herbs and veggies. Continued building chicken coop and didn't need to purchase anything for it this week, all recycled. Remembered to use my petrol discount docket from Coles.

I also made another big batch of hot cross buns yesterday which will get them through Easter. Yours look amazing by the way.

    Have a wonderful weekend.

  3. Happy Easter to you!

I am participating in a one-a-day frugal challenge on another forum. Some of the things I did this week:
    (1) My husband, who is not a wheeler dealer, bartered a non-working riding lawn mower for $200 worth of labor on our deck.
    (2) Those of us who live in rural and semi-rural areas have piles of crap hidden behind every structure. We are having to clean them out because we plan to sell the house. We had a whole kitchen full of wrecked kitchen cabinets. They were heavy and difficult to move. Then a lightbulb went on in my brain. A friend and I demo'd them and dragged the pieces to a safe location. Yesterday we burned them to a pile of ashes! This saved us about 4-5 trips to the dump and a lot of heavy lifting.
    (3) I did my income taxes (US) using the free download on Credit Karma. I've done my own for years, but always had to buy the software. E-filing was free, too. This saved me at least $80.
(4)I live a few miles from Washington state. Since I was there today, I bought my groceries in Washington. Their sales tax is 8.7% but food is exempt; Idaho tax is 6% on everything. I saved $2.69 in sales tax plus got a carton of 18 eggs free for a $25 spend. Total = $4.68 saved.
    (5) I dug up a shrub with multiple stems and sawed through the middle of it to make two plants. In the process, I damaged a bee balm plant and had to divide it into 4 pieces. I ended up with about $50 worth of free plants...which I gave to a friend. (I replanted half of the shrub and the biggest piece of bee balm). "What goes around comes around."

  4. Hi Wendy those hot cross buns look yummy! I hope you have a great Easter weekend with your family. Some things we got up to this week:
    - filled up petrol earlier in the week while it was cheap and all ready for the long weekend
    - Gratefully received some Australian cooked tiger prawns which were a great blessing
    - line dried all clothes as much as I could
    - received a woolworths gift card a while ago so I've been using that this week for items such as milk and some fruit etc. I didn't spend any of my own money
-gratefully received some dishwasher tablets in the mailbox which was a nice and unexpected blessing
    - picked some kale during the week for various meals, adding extra goodness to our meals
    - cleaned the microwave with white vinegar and soapy water, works a treat!
    - Took lunches from home
    - Returned an unwanted item that the toddler snuck into my shopping basket whilst I wasn't looking! I'll learn to be more careful next time!
Happy Easter to you and your family. Have a great week!

  5. Hi Wendy,

Happy Easter to you and your family, xxx
    Your Feijoas look yummy.

This week I mooed Sausage rolls, muffins, brownies, potato cakes, breadcrumbs and bread. A roast chicken did us for 3 meals, roast, flan and soup. DH's birthday was this week and as I had no time to make him a cake, I was able to pick up a mud cake at Woolies for a markdown price of $2.38.

I picked lots of things still from the garden, still haven't used the heater and used the oven to keep warm when cooking. Used a petrol voucher and also received 10c off petrol.
Made cards, booked a holiday to Coffs Harbour very cheaply thru a friends timeshare ($700.00 P/W) and changed car Insurance for a better deal. Also used the 2 light rule and received some goodies from various friends.

Your Hot Cross Buns look great.
    Blessings, xxx

  6. I made a half recipe of quiche for myself for solitary meals. I'll have another portion of it tomorrow evening when I'm alone once more and then put the rest in to freeze for a meal some other evening. I've shaken up my home routine and am quite excited to go to work on it once more. Always fun when something so frugal as making a schedule change can bring a spark of the joy one used to have in doing home things.
