  2. Hi Wendy,

Sorry, this is nothing to do with grocery bargains but I need your help and didn't want to miss your attention.

I bought an Easiyo and used your recipe yesterday to make my own yoghurt. When I checked it this morning it was not set at all and couldn't use it. If I tell you what I did and also observed, will you please be able to help me?

    1. I used two tablespoonfuls of natural yoghurt I had in the fridge as a starter without using a sachet.
    2. When I poured boiling water to the thermos it made few 'crackling' noises.
    3. It was a cold day in Melbourne on the 08th yesterday, so I wrapped a thick kitchen towel around the thermos and put it aside.
    4. I made sure I closed the lids of both the container and the thermos tight.
    5. When I checked it this morning after 17 hours, the water in the thermos was in room temperature (not hot at all). I let it sit on the bench top for 17 hours as it was a cold day.

    My questions are:
    1. Do you think I should use a store bought sachet for the first time without using 2 tbps of yoghurt I had in the fridge for a week or so?
    2. When you open the thermos after 8-12 or 24 hours, do you have hot water or water in room temperature? I thought thermos keeps water warm.
    3. If you thought my Easiyo was defective, should I return it as the water was neither hot nor warm when I opened it this morning? Or, is this normal?
    4. If not all these, what did you think went wrong with my first try?

I'm so sorry to barge in like this into your bargain post but I'm so heartbroken and desperate to get help. Please help.
Thank you so much in advance.
    Best regards,
    Millie

    1. Hi Millie.

It might have been the starter yoghurt you used. I usually use a Easiyo sachet to make natural yoghurt then when it's set, use two tablespoons of that to make sweet yoghurt ( or could be unsweetened ). Your starter yoghurt might not have been fresh enough.

Did you use full cream milk powder ? It must be full cream as it needs the fat to set. I also let it sit on the bench for up to 24 hours. Wrapping the towel around it is good in Winter.

I use about 100 mls of hot water from the kettle to make up the yoghurt mix with tap water. In Winter tap water can be quite cold. Also the thermos water should be lukewarm when you check on it after about 12 hours. Some people empty the thermos and add a fresh batch of hot water if they are having trouble setting the yoghurt..

Maybe empty the thermos and see if there are any cracks in it or water inbetween the two layers of the thermos.

Also, did you use a stick blender to mix everything ? I tried shaking it on my first try and it doesn't mix the starter yoghurt through the liquid.

Did you put the boiling water in the thermos up to the top of the red stand before you put the container in ?

  3. Thanks heaps for your speedy reply, Wendy. I knew you would help me asap. Yes I used full cream milk powder, used a stick blender to mix it and poured boiling water into the thermos up to the red 'stand'.

I too had doubts about my starter but as I didn't buy a starter sachet at the time, had to use what I had in the fridge. Couldn't wait to try this. I didn't use hot water at all for the mixture but only tap water. May be I should use 100ml of hot water diluted with tap water next time as you suggested and use a towel instead of a kitchen towel to wrap the thermos in cold days. Also, will check for any cracks in the thermos. I got really upset when I saw water in the thermos was not hot. When you take your container out to refrigerate, do you have hot water in the thermos or has it gone down to the room temperature?

Will try again soon using a new starter sachet and see how my second batch works. Hope I would get good results next time. Thank you so much once again, Wendy. I reapply appreciate your post on making yoghurt as well your help and advice.

    Have a lovely day!
    Thank you.
    Millie

    2. Sorry to but in - my method is a little different to Wendy's.

Did you use two big tablespoons of the starter? I rarely use the sachets, and I've never used a stick blender - what a good idea! I just stand and shake like crazy for about 5 minutes and just think I'm getting good exercise.

In winter I top the thermos up with boiling water about half-way through the incubating time.

And I use HOT water to mix the starter with the milk powder. I half fill the container with the hot water, add the starter and milk powder, shake like crazy, top up with more hot water and shake again.

I wouldn't worry about the crackling of the thermos - it sounds like it was reacting to the boiling water being poured in whilst it was cold.

    3. You can comment any time Cath. I think I read in the Easiyo instructions to use a little hot water in the mix for Winter.

    4. Hi Wendy and Cath,

Thank you so much for your advice and time.

I made a new batch this morning using a store bought sachet and used 100ml hot water diluted with tap water and used a spoon to dissolve it and then shook it crazy. Now in the thermos wrapped in a thick towel. Will check it later and let you know the results.

I was so relieved when Cath mentioned she wouldn't mind the crackling noise. There were none on the shelf yesterday and I had to check with the staff to get one from the back. It distracted me and I forgot to buy a starter sachet. Didn't want to let this go and be empty handed unless this was faulty.

Well, I'm so grateful to both of you. I sincerely apologize for all the trouble but I had to seek help. I personally don't know anyone who make their own yoghurt. Thank you for being such great angels. Will let you know the results tomorrow.

    5. Hi Wendy and Cath,

There are big, Bigger, BIGGEST {{{bear hugs}}} waiting for both of you with enormous number of THANK YOUs.

My second attempt was a huge success. I used a store bought sachet, used a mixture of hot water and tap water to mix the content, wrapped the thermos in a thick towel. Let it sit on the bench top for 12 hours. Viola ... when I opened the thermos, the container had thick creamy yoghurt. There was a bit of liquid on the top but it didn't matter. This time I poured a tiny bit of extra boiling water to the thermos and it was lukewarm even after 12 hours. I was assured nothing was wrong with the thermos. I guess it was the starter which I messed up with on my first attempt.

Beautiful taste. I put aside 2 heaped tablespoonfuls each in two containers for future use, in the freezer. Hubby was a happy boy and I was over the moon.

Thank you so much for everything, let be sharing your experience and tips & hints, giving advice and most of all encouraging me not to give up. I was so heartbroken assuming my thermos at fault.

I apologize once again from you and your fans for taking your valuable time and space in this post in the most inappropriate way. I really appreciate your patience and help.

May you all always be happy and successful!

    6. Millie, the reason I have this blog is to help people. I don't mind the questions. I'm glad it worked out for you. A little liquid in the top of the yoghurt is fine. It's called whey and is all part of it.

  4. Thanks for this information Wendy. I stocked up on the Sorbolene a few months ago, but the Cottonelle loo paper is always a good one to find on special. Love, Mimi xxx

  6. Dear Wendy,
Thank you. I noticed that my Dad on his shelves likes to have the box/carton from the supermarket so everything sits nice and straight. I thought you would appreciate that. Its not a bad idea. Chloe is often shopping for him and gets the whole tray of this or that and the supermarket let her take the container that holds it all. Well he likes this!
My stocking up is going well. All specials of course. Keeping an eye on the specials has helped heaps.
This week I will add the Morning Fresh. Lots of love, Annabel.xxx

  7. Maureen, thanks for letting us know about the IGA chicken specials, but perhaps next time you could specify which IGA has that. Today I drove around quite a bit and went to two IGAs trying to get the $5.99/k chicken breasts and they looked at me like I was a mad woman! That special is not at ALL IGAs.
