This Week's Frugal Tasks Saturday 12th August 2017

Baking,  cooking,  crafting and general frugalness has filled this week.  I've also been busy writing up some blog posts for future reading.  Stay tuned for Thursday's post.  You'll love it.

Here's my frugal list for the week -

*  Used lots of bread bags to line the bathroom bins.

*  Made and sold two lemon slices for a catering order.

*  Sold one dozen eggs.

*  Made sweetened condensed milk from scratch.  I froze some to make choc truffles later on.

*  Filled up my car with petrol using a discount docket.  It was $1.01 per litre at the discounted price.

*  Darren transferred another $10 worth of Flybys points onto our card.  We are saving the money to buy groceries on our next family holiday.

*  Fed some stale bread and grass to the chickens.

*  Sold a few more cards in my Blog Shop.  Thankyou to the customers for your support.

*  Made bubble and squeak to use up some leftovers in the fridge.

*  Kept the heater off for hours at a time when the Sun was shining.

*  Darren and I had a date night at home on /Wednesday.  We watched a dvd from our collection and ate snacks from the pantry.

*  Gratefully received the magnet strips from an old fridge door.  This will be used in crafts.

*  Our latest water bill reflects our continued reduction in water usage.  Unfortunately it doesn't quite cover the cost increases but it has helped.

  1. Can I use a pkt of arraroot biscuits instead for the lemon slice?

    2. I made it!! Plain arrarot with coconut and choc icing instead of lemon!
What a hit. Also made one with Aldi oreos
It seems that 1/2 tin of SCM and 125g butter and 1 cup of coconut makes it perfect, a great base the options are endless!!!!
Can you share your icing recipe, mine was great this time but its hit and miss!!!

    3. The icing is approx. 1 1/4 cup of icing sugar and juice of 1/2 a lemon ( or there abouts ). The icing should be fairly stiff so it sets.

  2. I love Bubble & Squeak, Wendy. I find it such a healthy and cheap way to get a serve of veggies in the morning for breakfast:) I worked 4 days out of 5 this week relief teaching so I was busy but the extra $ comes in handy! This week:
    * filled car at $1.11 which was cheapest price
    * had a big washing day (on one day I was home) and line dried everything in the sun
    * baked Weetbix slice and crunchy cereal cookies in my new oven
    * found some good specials for my stockpile
    * defrosted some stewed apples and had this with yoghurt for snacks
    and dessert one night.
Today, I want to get busy & make progress on a top I am sewing with fabric I got on special at Spotlight. I cut out the pattern ages ago but haven't gotten back to it since. Have lovely weekend. Meg:)

  3. Hi Wendy
I hope it's the original story you did with a current affair, I just loved that segment and as you can see am still very keen to show a few friends. You are probably sick of people asking but it truly was very inspiring

    1. Thankyou Kathleen. A friend has saved the first story and the Christmas story to an external space ( I'm not tech savvy ). Just waiting on him to help.

  5. Great list Wendy.
Our weather in Qld is very mild. I've line dried everything. Had a big washing week and used your washing powder.
Made a chocolate coconut slice and peanut butter choc chip cookies for lunches/snack. I saved a biscuit log for the freezer too.
    Cooked all meals from scratch.
Shopped a couple of good specials.
Found a great hint if you run out of dish tablets. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of bi carb on the bottom of the dishwasher and use a SMALL squeeze of dish liquid (I use morning fresh) It should spread to no moe than the size of a five cent piece. Or you may get way too many bubbles!!!! It worked well on my dishes/ dishwasher.
I've only spent money on food and bills this week! I realised I hadn't been to our local (huge) shopping for 3 weeks. No temptation!!
Found a great gift in my stash for a boys 5th birthday present.
Really trying hard to keep ahead of big bills and keep some money in the bank :))))))
    Have a lovely week.

    1. Well done on avoiding the shops for so long. I've been doing monthly shopping for many many years now with weekly top up of milk, fruit and veg. Some weeks I only need milk.

Don't you just love having a gift stash ?

  6. Nice lists, everyone!

We bled money on our house that is for sale this week, but made some frugal progress, too.
I did all the usual stuff—getting better control of cooking, hanging clothes to dry, turning off lights, etc.—plus a few Un-usual things:
    (1) Harvested a handful of blueberries from a bush planted last year.
    (2) I will still own this house in a couple of weeks when the apples and pears come on--made plans to can fruit again this year.
    (3) A friend repaired a chair and would not let me pay him.
    (4) Turned off irrigation water a few times. The lawn seems fine.
    (5) We are not running the A/C at night. Since we only sleep here occasionally, it’s fine. We keep it cool during the day for sales showings.
    (6) Placed free ads on craigslist for MIL’s pressure canner and my big Kitchen Aid stand mixer. Neither has sold yet. (I desperately wanted that mixer and then barely used it).
    (7) My carpet cleaner needed a new hose. I ordered a used one online for $17.99 and free shipping. A new hose would have cost at least $9 more.
The one unfrugal thing I did was pay my bills by check through the mail, instead of online. I wanted to be able to change my mailing address. I spent about $3.50 in postage that wouldn’t have been necessary if paid online.

  7. Hi Wendy,
Do your family roll their eyes about your stockpiling or have they seen the light. My husband is still in the roll the eyes and wonder if I have lost the plot. Tonight I'm up as I have restless legs so I thought I'd do something useful and finish and send my order to an Indian herb and spice place in Dandenong online. No postage over $100 which is great. I've ordered enough herbs and spices for approx 3 yrs. I intend to decanter what I'd estimate I would use in 3mth & vacuum seal the other and store in the freezer. Anyhow that's the plan. Since we moved out of the metropolitan area to the sticks I don't have the same variety in shops but I'm being creative and frugal. Frugal jobs this week:
    * Take my lunch every day and do not buy coffee or lunch - ever!
    * Made 50/50 cordial. It will have to be lemon now as the oranges have finished.
    * Bought and planted 2 avocado trees and 1 mandarin tree.
    * Revamped some curtains that were in another bedroom for our room and they look great - no cost!
    * Now this is where it's not so frugal. My husband has retired this year, he just hasn't realised it yet so he has decided to repaint the total inside of the house. I have to say it is looking great and we won't have to do it again for a long time.
    * This weekend we are going to have a very mini holiday at a caravan park near a local dam. The change of scenery will be nice. Hope you have a good week Wendy.
    Julee
