5 Ways To Reuse Glass Jars

Do you look at empty pasta sauce jars,  tomato paste jars and jam jars and wonder if you can use them instead of throwing them in the recycling bin ?  They just seem too good to throw out don't they ?  Here are a few ways to reuse them and save a bit of money -

*  Store your much used herbs and spices in them for freshness.  I use lots of dried onion flakes,  parsley,  basil,  oregano,  chives,  rosemary and garlic.  The larger jars would be awesome.

*  Glass jars of all shapes and sizes make wonderful vases.  Just cut the stems to suit the jar height and arrange them into a stylish posy.  Very posh and very elegant.

*  Select glass jars with the pop button lid to store your homemade jam,  relish and lemon butter in.  Add a cute material hat, ribbon  and label to give it a completed look and you have yourself an inexpensive gift to give for any occasion.

*  Glass jars perfect for storing screws,  nuts,  bolts and nails in the garage.  Many people like to nail the lid to the underneath of a shelf.  Then just screw the jar on.

*  Little tea lights look fantastic in glass jars.  Pop the tea light in by itself or add a little sand,  stones,  shells,  glitter or anything inflammable for a themed look.

  1. Hi Wendy, we met on Mimi’s Tray of Bliss on the weekend so I thought I’d pop in and say hello. I love jars too. My daughter once completed a Facebook quiz about how well you know your mother. On the question ‘What does she collect?’, she answered ‘glass jars’ lol. Have a lovely day, Kathy

  3. I put shells collected at the beach in a large olive jar to about the one third mark. I then placed a small pillar candle in it. This really looks lovely and a few people have commented on it. The olive jars are being saved for more of these shell/candle jars.
All my herbs and preserves go into saved jars. I just keep an eye on the lids as the vinegars in pickles can cause them to rust.
I have a spaghetti sauce jar in my laundry cupboard holding the smaller brushes I use for cleaning, like the grout cleaning brush. In my craft room I use jars to keep buttons, safety pins, dress making pins and my rotary cutters all together.
    I love glass jars.

  4. Great idea! I used to store the sequins for my daughters ice skating dresses in the little preserve sample jars. These days I collect them for when I make up marmalade and chutneys. Going to organise the garage next

  7. Great post Wendy!

We never throw out glass jars or bottles. Bottles can be used for putting homemade sauce etc into. We use the Worcestershire sauce bottles for putting lemon juice or oil in (or when making homemade Worcestershire sauce). They are a handy size and have the plastic pour bit in the top so the liquid doesn't gush out in a hurry. There are so many glass jars in boxes in our shed, we will never run out lol! I use larger jars for keeping food items in the pantry, handy for keeping pantry moths at bay. Baby food jars make the best herb jars, as they are just the right size. Mostly I use jars for preserves :)

  9. Hi Wendy, I have been reading your blog for years and I love your mid week posts! I have a very healthy jar collection. My favourite way to use jars is definitely to put beautiful fresh flowers in them- such an easy way to make a room welcoming and fresh feeling.

    1. I think flowers in jars look better than using vases. They don't date either.

  10. I have been a collector of glass jars for years. I have a collection of 3 sizes of green jars that I store change in - I sort it into the different jars for easy rolling. I use them for leftovers too. All glass jars are kept on a shelf on my wire shelving unit. I also have glass "boxes" - 2 squares and 1 rectangle that are food grade. People are always asking if I have a container for this or that, and most often, I find a glass container for their use. Years ago, one of the spaghetti sauce companies used jars that had measurements on the side, and pretty veggies on the front (under the label). I collected them, glued little pieces of fabric on the tops and sold them at yard sales for $1 each. I think the sauce was $1.39 a jar at the time, so I made back almost 2/3 of what I spent and I enjoyed the sauce too!.
