This Week's Frugal Tasks Saturday 10th September 2016

Spring has sprung and I'm just busting to get out in the garden.  As soon as the weather brightens up a little I'll be out there almost every day pulling weeds and planting our Spring veggie garden.  Thankfully with all the renos making a mess in our home,  I've wiped and cleaned everything as I put things back in place.  This will free me up for outdoor activities.  Here's what I got up to this week -

*  I cleaned the dishwasher using bi carb and white vinegar.  I also cleaned the kettle using citric acid.

*  Stocked up on Pinocleen disinfectant at half price for $2.49 a 1.25 litre bottle.

*  Made lemon slice for a family afternoon tea.  I used lemons from our tree and sweetened condensed milk I'd made.

*  Made four loaves of wholemeal bread with extra goodness.  Yes,  I used both ovens at the same time.  So quick and easy to bake in bulk.

*  We had lots of electrical work done on our home on Wednesday.  While the power was off I used the time to cut out images to make men's birthday cards.

*  Dried all the washing on the clothesline and clotheshorses.

*  Picked silverbeet from the garden for a couple of meals.

*  Froze one leftover portion of tuna casserole and three of mince pasta bake.  Soon I'll have enough frozen leftovers to write them into the menu plan.

*  Saved lots of shower and washing machine water for each next load.

*  Continued to feed the chickens handfuls of grass each day and a broccoli head ( gone to seed ) every few days

*  Diluted the dishwashing liquid and refilled the pump.

*  Gratefully received lots of bread bags.  I turned them inside out,  decrumbed them and dried them on a clotheshorse outside.  They'll be used for bin liners and for flouring chicken drumsticks.

*   Stayed away from the shops as much as possible.  I haven't been well since Tuesday night so Darren and Jessica ducked up to the shops for milk,  carrots and tomatoes.

*  I needed to go to the city with Megan on Tuesday.  I took bottles of water and muesli bars to save a little money on food.

*  Kept the heat off during the day most days this week.  I love Spring weather for many reasons especially the gas and electricity savings.

I'm sorry I don't have many photos this week due to me being unwell.

  2. Hi from the UK
We have been away this week making the most of the weather , we took the caravan to Cambridge. I have to admit to eating out 3 times once for my birthday, but I took the rest of the food with me.
Frugal things I have done this week
Bought 2 T Shirts for me for next year 1/2 price in the sale.
Bought a winter blouse and some socks with a gift card
Bought a preserving book in a discount store at 1/5 price for SIL for Christmas
Bought some canning rings at 25% off.
Bought some Pyrex dished with lids full price but it will help with the baking.
I have only been home 3 hours but I have picked 4 mini marrows/large courgettes, raspberries, 3 bell peppers, 5 cucumbers and a hand full of cucmelons.
I am glad your weather is warming up, we are defiantly into autumn now. So I am jealous I hate being cold and damp. Have a good week
    Chris

    1. Chris, you bought some great bargains this week. All good savings one way or another. Our raspberries are starting to come back to life.

Our Winters are very mild compared to yours in the UK.

  3. Hi, it's Maxine from northern Idaho, USA. Some of the things I did this week:

    (1) I have become more mindful about recycling. I remembered to take my own bags to the grocery store.

    (2) And speaking of groceries, I bought about 15 lbs. of boneless pork loin for $1.88 lb. I am cutting some of it into chops. It didn't save me anything this week, but it sure will this winter.

    (3) Recycled plastic bags for freezing.

    (4) Poured the contents of several bottles of cleaning supplies together and recycled the bottles. I saved two small pump bottles to re-use, but I'm not sure what to do with them. Any ideas?

    (5) Gratefully received a food processor from one of my pinochle partners. I have never owned one before.

    (6) Passed on the following: lots of pears and apples from my trees and perennial plants. What goes around comes around.

    (7) We desperately wanted a West Highland white terrier (we already have one, who was a rescue). We got one for an exceptionally low price because he was the runt. However, we discovered he has congenital knee issues. My husband said, "What the heck, we don't have grandchildren--we'll see this little guy through." This is NOT going to be frugal! However, this little guy has heart--he deserves a chance. I asked for and received a full refund from the breeder. Of the dogs we have owned over the last 44 years, three have been giveaways and two (including the other Westie) were actual rescues. So, we are still batting 1,000 on free dogs.

    1. Maxine, you can use the pump bottles to portion out dishwashing liquid, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, hair gel or liquid soap.

You can use the food processor to make bread crumbs ( fresh or dried and seasoned ), sweetened condensed milk, whole orange cake ( recipe here on my blog ), laundry powder, pizza dough, zucchini slice, lemon slice etc etc. It's going to save you a small fortune.

  4. Hi Wendy. Your anniversary roses are lovely and your lemon slice looks yummy! I am making lemon loaf today for family afternoon tea and to freeze for school morning tea during week. I'm also going to try a gluten free "bread" using a new recipe. I am hoping it doesn't end up like all my other bread making attempts! My best saving this week was on chicken legs where I got a good deal for buying 2kg. I cooked up half and froze the other half. I shopped specials at Coles and was very happy to see Macadamia Nut oil (which I use in my banana breads) was on sale. Meg

  5. Good week again Wendy. That lemon slice looks delicious, any chance of posting the recipe? God bless you Maxine and your husband for taking on the pup with problems and giving him a chance, and for all the other rescues/strays you have taken in and looked after and loved. Lisa

  6. So jealous of your double ovens. One of my work places has the same ovens as you and I love using them. This week I received some cooked sausages from a scout bbq I worked on for free and made curry sausages for tea. Started to declutter my house one bag or box at a time. Took my lunches to work with me. Grateful one of my chooks (chickens) is back laying. Picked up a couple of Samaritan purse boxes which my girls will fill as part of their Christmas charity gifts this year. I am having to re evaluate our finances as we are transferring Caitlin my eldest to a private Catholic school next year for her Year 11 as the public school is not offering the subjects that she wishes to study and they have after school study hall. I am lucky that Caitlin's boss's daughter is finishing at the same school and I will be getting all of her uniforms very cheap.
Having a truly prosperous week Abundant Lifers.
