Abundant Cottage Adventures Sunday 29th March 2020

We had a slightly quieter day at The Gower Abundant Cottage.  Melbourne had a thunderstorm late in the afternoon which gave the gardens a good drink.  Here's what else we did around the home -

*  Darren and I watched our church service online.  It was bit different sitting on a comfortable couch with the footrest up enjoying our Pastor's message.

*  Megan gave Luka a haircut.  Considering Megan is not a hairdresser I think she did a fabulous job.

*  Darren and I vacuumed and mopped the floors.

*  On tonight's menu it was Get Your Own.  Darren made turkey meat dumplings for anyone in the house who wanted them.  I'm not a big fan of dumplings so I had a meal from the freezer.

*  Cut up and froze the beans I'd picked from our garden over the last few days.

Beans from our garden ready to freeze.

How are you coping with staying at home ?

  1. I watched Church on-line too. Did a big stack on ironing, went for a drive for the sake of seeing some different scenery (stayed in car), then had a rest. Best wishes, Tania in Hawthorn

  2. I pottered around and did a little cleaning. Before our library went into lockdown we were allowed to borrow up to fifty books. I picked up a large number of Christian authors so I had a lovely time reading. Still want to be out and about as I need some personal space.

    1. Fifty books will keep you occupied for a while.

  3. Wendy that is what we have been doing too is cutting up, blanching and freezing all the produce from the gardens after picking them. Good on you as it gives advanced meal ingredients like we have here :). Always nice to see the rain and smell that rain smell I think.

DH did sacrament at home after priesthood holders were given permission to do it in their own homes for their families after our chapel was closed due to restrictions. We sang a few hymns together using background music from the internet.

DH and I washed the dishes and put them away to tidy up the kitchen. DH also vacuumed the whole home.

Other than that we relaxed and dinner was sausage sandwiches for something a little easier.

    Have a great week :).

  5. We emptied the compost and started a new one, cleaned out the laundry cupboard and gardened. Lunch was leftovers and dinner was fried rice using eggs from our chickens and vegetables from the garden.
    A beautiful day,

  6. Hello Wendy,

I am as busy as ever. No time to be bored lol!

I am baking your bread once a week, planting more in the veggie patch and organising more beds for extra plantings.

Picking beans, silver beet, beetroot, tomatoes, capsicums, celery and eggplants from the garden.

Washing, cleaning and organising a room for extra stockpile supplies.

Stewed apples and making apple scrap vinegar from the leftover apples.

Picked basil for drying, and trying to make saurerkraut.

I will be pickling the beetroot in the next couple of days.

The sewing machine is out for mending and sewing masks with a pocket for filter.

I miss seeing my grandchildren and parents but it is a small price to pay to get on top of this virus. I am enjoying the peaceful quiet days. The traffic has slowed and it is a pleasure to just potter around doing jobs, while listening to the birds sing.

I am enjoying your cottage adventures posts.

    Take care and stay well,

    xTania

  7. I'd say now is an excellent time to practise haircuts: no-one outside the family to see the results, and it will grow back for another practise round :)
My daughters (8 and 11) get sent their schoolwork on Friday, for the coming week. For daughter 1, this is almost a full week's work of tasks, for daughter 2, this is 2 mornings and she is done for the week.
We have re-instated the rule of no electronics (other than required for school) between 8.30 and 15.30. If they finish their schoolwork early, they have to find something to do/play/draw. We have also given them extra household chores, as husband and I both work fulltime from home. I already take extra breaks to help my daughters with their homework, and make it up in the evenings.
We have registered eldest daughter for an online typing course (it'll be required when she goes to secondary school next year, so better to do it now), and husband is supervising this (just sitting next to her to make sure she stays put and finishes her daily 20 minutes).
We go to bed early, and rise early, to get some work in before dds need our attention.
Daughters get sent into the garden as much as possible, and luckily, the weather has been lovely. Cold at times, but sunny.

  8. Hi Wendy,

I hope you and your family are managing okay.

I miss catching up with my two sisters and brother and their families. We like to get together often but for now are staying in touch by telephone.

By staying at home I am spending more time in the garden and I am doing more baking. In the next few days I will start making a quilt for my daughter. I'm coping with having to stay at home by keeping busy doing what I enjoy most.

I'm glad you are posting again. You have such a positive attitude and are an inspiration to your readers. Thank you for sharing your recipes and hints. The KFC is on my to make list. It looks great.

    Take care and stay healthy.

    Best wishes, Maria.

    1. Thankyou for your kind words Maria. I hope you enjoy the KFC drumsticks.

I'm hoping to slow down a little and get out my card making supplies. Time to do something I really love to do.
